Mobilegeddon

May 1, 2015

April 21st – the day Google officially launched its mobile friendly ranking algorithm. What does this mean for your website?

Firstly, Google’s new formula only affects search rankings on mobile devices (smart phone and tablets) not desktops and laptops. However, it may have a huge impact given that in March 2015, 36.4m people in the UK accessed the internet using mobile devices (source: Comscore).

The latest algorithm will favour websites that Google defines as mobile friendly, where text is easy to read without having to zoom in or scroll horizontally and the pages avoid unplayable content.

Google claim that “while the mobile friendly change is important, we still use a variety or signals to rank search results. The intent of the search query is still a very strong signal – so even if a page with high quality content is not mobile friendly, it could still rank high if it has great content for the query”.

You can check your sites individual pages with the Mobile Friendly Test.  If your site’s pages aren’t mobile friendly there may be a significant decrease in mobile traffic from Google search.

If you need to update your site to make it mobile friendly here are some Google mobile friendly guidelines to help you with that.
